This paper discusses a quantum-mechanical metal-insulator transition t
hat occurs in an anisotropic electron-hole system with the electrons a
nd holes separated and confined to a double quantum well. The critical
concentration n(c) of carriers in the system above which the excitoni
c (insulating) phase becomes an electron-hole (metallic) phase is inve
stigated, along with its dependence on the distance between wells D. (
