Cj. Begley et Ln. Virgin, A DETAILED STUDY OF THE LOW-FREQUENCY PERIODIC BEHAVIOR OF A DRY FRICTION OSCILLATOR, Journal of dynamic systems, measurement, and control, 119(3), 1997, pp. 491-497
This work examines the periodic stopping motion present in the low-fre
quency response of a dry friction oscillator; excited harmonically thr
ough a base spring. Piecewise linear solution methods are used to comp
are two simple friction models, to consider the effects of viscous dam
ping, and to illustrate stability considerations. Scaling phenomena, p
articularly at degenerate frequency ratios, are noted. Finally, experi
mental results provide a means to assess the effectiveness of the simp
le friction models in predicting observed motion.
