Abstract
The outer membrane protein and lipopolysaccharide compositions of Bact eroides fragilis strains which produced metallo-beta-lactamase were sh own to be different from those of fully sensitive random clinical isol ates of Bacteroides fragilis in which metallo-beta-lactamase productio n was not detected. This may reflect differences in the permeability b arrier and provides phenotypic evidence that Bacteroides fragilis whic h produce metallo-beta-lactamase may belong to a separate biotype. Out er membrane profiles may provide a rapid means of identifying these pr oblem strains. (C) 1997 Academic Press.
