Abstract
Resistivity and magnetization measurements were performed on the manga nese-based perovskite (La0.5Nd0.5)(0.67)Ca0.33MnO3 which were exchange d by the O-16 and O-18 isotopes. There is a novel crossover from a met allic to an insulating ground-state by simply changing the oxygen isot ope from O-16 to O-18. Our results are consistent with a scenario in w hich the insulating behavior is caused by the presence of lattice and magnetic polarons (charge carriers dressed by both lattice distortions and spin polarizations) or a charge-ordered state.
