P. Hankebaier et al., EVALUATION OF VAGINAL AND PERINEAL AREA DURING THE USE OF EXTERNAL SANITARY PROTECTION THROUGHOUT THE MENSTRUAL-CYCLE, Acta obstetricia et gynecologica Scandinavica, 73(6), 1994, pp. 486-491
A clinical study evaluated potential external genital effects associat
ed with the use of sanitary protection. The subjects used either a pad
with traditional cellulose absorbent core or one containing cellulose
and absorbent gelling material. Assessments included objective (trans
epidermal water loss, vaginal pH) and semi-quantitative subjective - m
ethods (skin irritation grading, gynaecological inspection). No statis
tical or clinical significant differences for any of the parameters ev
aluated between the groups using the two pads, or compared to the non-
pad control period, were found. The parameters used to study the effec
ts on the genital area of an external sanitary product appear appropri
ate. No significant changes were observed for either of the two pads d
uring daily use for two menstrual cycles.
