Abstract
A series of ortho-, meta- and para-substituted zinc porphyrin-pheophor
bide dyads were synthesized directly from methyl pheophorbide-alpha by
trans-esterification of beta-keto methyl ester with hydroxymethyl sub
stituted porphyrins. Quantitative energy transfer occurred from the ex
cited zinc porphyrin to the pheophorbide. The excited state of the phe
ophorbide was quenched by an electron transfer reaction front the zinc
porphyrin that was found to depend both on the distance between chrom
ophores and the polarity of solvent. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
