Children must be taught how to act, and it is easy to assume that such
teaching requires the use of rewards and punishments. Yet research sh
ows that rewards and punishments are likely to have unintended and, of
ten, undesirable consequences. The paper discusses some of this resear
ch and casts the results into a context that integrates language learn
ing, value transmission, and behavior. Alternatives to the use of sanc
tions are suggested. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
