Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (Sm) is a rare but increasingly encounter
ed cause of human infections. Invasive procedure's and use of imepenem
are risk factors for Sm infections, which are virtually always nosoco
mial. Many Sm strains are multiresistant, and the most active antimicr
obials are ticarcillin/clavulanic acid, trimethoprime/sulfamethoxazole
, latamoxef, and ciprofloxacin. The main forms of Sm infection are pne
umonia, septicemia, meningitis, endocarditis, and urinary tract infect
ion.
