Abstract
Toric degenerations of polynomial ideals occur if one allows certain p artial term orders in the theory of Grobner bases. We prove that the c ollection of toric degenerations of an ideal can be monotonically embe dded into the complex closure of the Grobner fan. A process of geometr ic localization on the Grobner fan of the ideal yields the Grobner fan s of the toric degenerations. (C) 1997 Academic Press Limited.
