(Rare-earth)(2-z)CezCuO4 compounds do not superconduct unless (i) the
rare-earth is non-magnetic (J=0) or exhibits crystal-field splitting (
J not equal 0 and L not equal 0) which inhibits pair-breaking by its m
agnetic moment, and (ii) the rare-earth is large enough for the crysta
l to form a cage capable of containing interstitial O-1.
