Abstract
In the present work environment, traditional jobs are giving way to fl exible, temporary, and task-based contractual relationships. Economic conditions explain some of the shift away from customary patterns of e mployment. Other important factors arise from changes in labor market institutions. A historical and theoretical context provides insights i nto trends in employment and their potential consequences for managers .
