Continuous sedimentation of solid particles in a liquid takes place in
a clarifier-thickener unit, which has one feed inlet and two outlets.
The process is vital in a waste water treatment plant, where the part
icles consist of several biological components. The concentrations of
these are modelled by a one-dimensional system of conservation laws wi
th source term. It is shown how a unique solution can be obtained, and
how analytical solutions are used to form a conservative numerical al
gorithm. (C) 1997 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
