Highly ordered protein monolayers with defined structures and function
s can be generated using appropriate modifications of the original Lan
gmuir-Blodgett method. The characteristics of such monolayers of prote
ins, and enzymes in particular, are summarized, together with an evalu
ation of their potential applications to biocatalysis. None of the oth
er immobilization techniques confers such long-term protection and the
rmostability on the structure and function of immobilized proteins.
