A deep-inelastic (Compton) neutron scattering experiment on H2O-D2O mi
xtures at T = 293 K has been carried out. Well-resolved H and D neutro
n recoil peaks in the time-of-flight spectra permit the direct determi
nation of the ratio Q = sigma(H)/sigma(D) of the H and D total cross s
ections. In contrast to every conventional expectation, Q has been obs
erved to vary strongly with the K-D composition. This striking effect
provides, for the first time, direct evidence for short-lived entangle
ment of adjacent protons (deuterons) in condensed matter at room tempe
rature.
