Vapour-deposited overgrowths of Na-beta ''-Al2O3 that grow on beta ''-
Al2O3 single-crystal films at 1300-1350 degrees C have been studied by
X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Overgrowth relationships a
re interpreted by matching the oxygen arrays of the deposited and back
ground crystal lattice. Free energy calculations reveal the possible v
apour-vapour reactions that lead to Na-beta ''-Al2O3 overgrowth format
ion.
