Based on the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the problem of the
interaction of electrical double layers of dissimilar colloidal parti
cles was solved under the assumption that the regime of particle surfa
ce charging is in equilibrium. There are three types of charging of th
e particle surface by electrolyte ions whose concentration is in the H
enry region: (a) adsorption of cations (anions) on an initially unchar
ged surface; (b) ion adsorption (ion exchange) on initially charged su
rface; and (c) ion adsorption (ion exchange) on amphoteric surfaces we
re considered. All three cases can be reduced to the last case when th
e Nernst surface potentials are different. Analytical expressions for
potentials, charge densities of the plates, and the electrostatic comp
onent of particle interaction energy were derived as functions of the
shortest distance between the particle surfaces and qualitatively stud
ied.
