Abstract
The improvement of liquid-crystal display performance is an area of gr eat interest, in both theoretical and practical terms. I argue that an y complete optimization in the large parameter spaces involved will re quire, at least as a first step, an accurate and efficient numerical m odel of the display at the pixel level. I present a general and flexib le way of quantifying display performance in terms of application-spec ific metric functions depending on various characteristics of the disp lay function chosen to be important, and I recast display optimization in terms of the search for the extrema of these metrics. This allows us to search the parameter space in a much more efficient and systemat ic manner. Applications are discussed and results presented.
