Mf. Flynn, NUMERICAL OPTIMIZATION OF LIQUID-CRYSTAL DISPLAYS WITH USE OF PERFORMANCE METRICS, Journal of the Optical Society of America. A, Optics, image science, and vision., 11(8), 1994, pp. 2220-2225
The improvement of liquid-crystal display performance is an area of gr
eat interest, in both theoretical and practical terms. I argue that an
y complete optimization in the large parameter spaces involved will re
quire, at least as a first step, an accurate and efficient numerical m
odel of the display at the pixel level. I present a general and flexib
le way of quantifying display performance in terms of application-spec
ific metric functions depending on various characteristics of the disp
lay function chosen to be important, and I recast display optimization
in terms of the search for the extrema of these metrics. This allows
us to search the parameter space in a much more efficient and systemat
ic manner. Applications are discussed and results presented.
