An impulse model is suggested for describing the exchange through high gradient layers where turbulence should not exist in accordance with the Richardson criterion, It is assumed that the outbursts of turbulen ce occur in the pycnocline only during certain periods of time and in certain areas as a result of the superposition of wave and shear curre nts, The average value of these occurrences was determined for a botto m density intrusion of the North Sea waters into the Baltic Sea and th e seasonal pycnocline for different weather and hydrological condition s.
