Recent research in sport psychology and behavioral medicine has highli
ghted the importance of psychosocial factors in sports performance and
in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of sports injury. T
his article presents an overview of the psychosocial and behavioral ri
sk factors known to contribute to sports injury risk and rehabilitatio
n, as well as guidelines for assessment and treatment of sports injury
from a biopsychosocial perspective. Finally, areas for future researc
h and clinical practice are discussed, particularly regarding the role
of psychology within the sports medicine team.
