Abstract
Curricular reform in the education of medical students is highlighted within the context of changing patterns of provision of health care. A number of industrialised countries' medical schools have accepted tha t they have a 'social contract' to respond to the health needs of the populations they serve. Such a contract, and the commitment to populat ions which it would necessitate, is also relevant in the South African context.
