Abstract
A letter-detection task was used to investigate the development of a u nitization effect in reading among speakers varying in their English f luency and educational backgrounds. Three groups of native-Chinese spe akers and two groups of native-English speakers were tested with two E nglish passages. The results indicate that, as individuals develop the ir knowledge of English, they increase the size of their reading units .
