Abstract
The structures of the highly ordered liquid crystalline smectic phases of N-pentyl-N'-(p-pentyloxyphenyl)piperazine are identified using X-r ay diffraction methods. For this compound a phase sequence hexagonal s mectic B (S(B))-orthorhombic crystalline smectic E (C(E))-monoclinic c rystalline smectic H (C(H)) is observed for the first time. The change s in structural symmetry at the phase transitions are discussed.
