At the end of the 18th century, the Staffordshire pottery industry beg
an transfer printing designs on refined earthenwares. Gaining immediat
e acceptance from both the British and American markets, printed earth
enwares remained immensely popular until the mid-19th century. Hundred
s of printed patterns were produced, and these patterns formed distinc
tive decorative styles based on central motifs and borders. Using char
acteristics of datable, marked vessels as a database, this study estab
lishes a chronology for dating printed earthenwares based on decorativ
e styles and color.
