Abstract
Polysulfide can be added in kraft pulping to improve the hemicellulose yield. To produce polysulfide in the mill, a portion of the sulfide i n white liquor can be oxidized. Batch and continuous pilot plant trial s at two kraft mills confirmed the technical feasibility of using lime mud as the primary oxidation catalyst. With oxygen and air as oxidant s and with small amounts of MnO2 added, a cooking liquor was produced with polysulfide concentrations suitable for pulping.
