Jon D. Tomkins is CEO and a director of KLA-Tencor Corp. of Mountain V
iew, Calif., a leader in yield management and process monitoring syste
ms for the semiconductor industry. He has a BS in electrical engineeri
ng from the University of Washington and an MBA from Stanford Universi
ty. After a brief stint at Hewlett-Packard Co., Tomkins joined Spectra
-Physics in 1967 and soon moved into general management positions, fin
ally serving as president and CEO from 1988 to 1990. In 1991 he joined
Tencor Instruments as chairman, CEO and president, He assumed his cur
rent position after the company's merger with KLA Instruments Corp. th
is year. KLA-Tencor has annual sales of approximately $1 billion and e
mploys more than 4000 people. It products include those used for wafer
inspection, overlay registration, and linewidth and film-thickness me
asurement.
