The Bajocian-Bathonian red beds are affected by an extensive tectonic
activity in the Atlantic passive margin of Morocco. Their sedimentatio
n is controlled by NE-SW to NNE-SSW normal faults. In addition, the se
quence formation is intruded by basaltic lavas and doleritic sills who
se transitional affinity and within-plaque geodynamic setting are indi
cated by petrographic and geochemical studies. We relate these tectoni
c and magmatic activities to the initial stage of the oceanic accretio
n in the Central Atlantic.
