The rational choice of an antiinfectious in pet animals is based on a
quadruple analysis: clinical, bacteriological, pharmacological and tox
icological. This brief review insists on the second and third chapters
. In bacteriology, a totally rationalized method using antibiogram is
often, economically speaking, difficult to achieve: still, it is possi
ble to recommand a semi-empirical (or probabilist) method based on an
epidemiological knowledge of the aetiology of infections. In pharmacol
ogy, the knowledge of the mode of action of the antiinfectious and its
pharmacokinetics are both very important for the final choice.
