K. Floyd et Mt. Morman, AFFECTIONATE COMMUNICATION IN NONROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS - INFLUENCES OF COMMUNICATOR, RELATIONAL, AND CONTEXTUAL FACTORS, Western journal of communication, 61(3), 1997, pp. 279-298
Despite its importance for healthy relational development, the overt c
ommunication of affection is inherently risk-laden and subject to norm
ative expectancies for appropriateness. The present study examines a n
umber of individual, relational, and contextual factors that individua
lly and collectively influence the perceived appropriateness of commun
icating affection in nonromantic dyadic relationships. An experiment i
nvolving 386 subjects was conducted to assess the influence of biologi
cal sex, sex composition, relational type, and the privacy and emotion
al intensity of interactive contexts. Predictions regarding their infl
uence were substantially supported.
