M. Studnickova, INDUCED VIBRATIONS OF LEEWARD ROPES - A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE, Journal of wind engineering and industrial aerodynamics, 65(1-3), 1996, pp. 179-188
Bundles of ropes were used as cable-stays of bridges. When the mutual
distance between the ropes is less than three times the diameter (D) o
ver bar, interference galloping can occur. Experiments in wind tunnel
showed the susceptibility of even heavy weighted ropes to induced vibr
ations. Excessive vibrations of cables were observed on the bridge in
Prague in very slight winds. Spacers between the ropes suppressed the
oscillations.
