Abstract
Before 1960, it was generally thought reasonable to define cardiac mus
cle function by extrapolation from results found for skeletal muscle.
As heart muscle was studied in its own right, if became obvious, parti
cularly with respect to its calcium metabolism, that the heart has dev
eloped unique mechanisms for contractile control.
