Abstract
U-Pb dating on single grain zircons indicates a Proterozoic age, 1703 +/- 14 Ma (2 sigma) for orthogneiss from Birusa (South Russia). This i s considered as the emplacement age for the granite and contradicts th e Archaean age inferred from local geological fieldwork. This date bri ngs into question the actual extent of the Archaean terrane in the wes tern part of the Siberian Shield.
