By utilizing the long observation time provided by an ion storage ring
and a laser probing technique, time-resolved studies of the 5d F-4(7/
2), 5d (2)G(9/2), 5d (2)G(7/2) and 5d D-4(7/2), metastable levels abou
t 12 eV above the round state in the Xe+ ion have been performed. Exte
nsive studies of possible systematic effects have been carried out in
order to establish accurate values for the metastable lifetimes. Value
s for the 5d F-4(7/2), 5d (2)G(9/2), and 5d (2)G(7/2) lifetimes (57.2
+/- 0.7, 44.7 +/- 1.1, and 3.4 +/- 1.0 ms, respectively) are presented
and compared with the results of theoretical calculations.
