THE INHOMOGENEOUS CIRCUMSTELLAR ENVELOPE OF RIGEL (BETA-ORIONIS-A)

We report on time series H alpha profiles of the late B-type supergian t Rigel (beta Orionis A). Our observations indicate the presence of va riable and asymmetric outflows and infalls of matter. We have recorded a blueshifted high-velocity absorption component in H alpha almost si multaneously with Kaufer et al. The final part of this extraordinary e vent has been observed. We have found that blueshifted high-velocity a bsorption completely disappeared in one month, and, during another, re dshifted strong absorption appeared at 50 km s(-1). Based on our obser vations and those reported in the literature, we propose extended rota ting magnetic structures (closed loops) in the mantle of Rigel. The fu ndamental parameters of the star are discussed.
