The use of zirconia amperometric pump-gauge sensors with reference ele
ctrodes for the qualitative and quantitative determination of oxygen,
sulphur dioxide and nitric oxide was investigated. Corrosion of platin
um electrodes occurred during operation in SO2 and NO atmospheres. Res
ults suggested that electronic conduction was induced in the zirconia
during operation in SO2-containing atmospheres. Characteristics in NO
mixtures demonstrated encouraging conformance with theory.
