I. Ando et al., ACTIVATION OF A GOLD ELECTRODE FOR THE OXIDATION OF L-ASCORBIC-ACID -ADSORBED SUBSTRATE AS A CATALYST, Bulletin of the Chemical Society of Japan, 70(9), 1997, pp. 2187-2192
The simple electrochemical activation of a gold electrode for the oxid
ation of L-ascorbic acid was examined. A polycrystalline gold electrod
e was activated for the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid by positive sweep
s within a narrow potential range in a sample solution. The activation
mechanism was investigated by voltammetry and in situ electrochemical
STM. The activation is ascribed to the coordinative adsorption of L-a
scorbic acid on the gold electrode, where it behaves as a catalyst for
the oxidation of L-ascorbic acid in bulk.
