Haminaea elegans (Gray, 1825), a tropical species considered as amphia
tlantic by some authors solely on the basis of the shell, is recorded
for the first time in West African equatorial waters. New data on the
shell microsculpture, radula, jaws, gizzard plates, and soft parts are
provided. Anatomical comparison with western Atlantic specimens confi
rms the amphiatlantic status of this species. A review of the type mat
erial of Haminaea taylorae Petuch, 1987, allows us to include this tax
on as a junior synonym of Haminaea elegans.
