A spectrometer for transient infrared absorption is described for samp
les which are exchanged or regenerated slowly. It is based on an excim
er/dye laser system operating at 5-10 Hz repetition rate. Excitation p
ulses at 308 nm with 3 mJ energy are followed by infrared probe pulses
which can be scanned continuously in the range 1950-4300 cm(-1). Infr
ared absorbance changes are detected with an accuracy of 1 mOD and a t
ime resolution of 1.8 ps.
