We have improved the output characteristics of a vacuum ultraviolet (V
UV) xenon excimer lamp by applying a magnetic field parallel to the xe
non gas jet discharge current. Active control of the discharge plasma
by applying an axial magnetic field enables us to reduce the character
istic diffusion length, leading to an increase in the xenon excimer em
ission power. With a magnetic field strength of 0.1 T, the maximum emi
ssion power is 500 mW, which is 2.4 times as high as that with no magn
etic field.
