M. Feast et P. Whitelock, CARBON AND M-TYPE STARS IN THE OUTER HALOES OF THE MAGELLANIC CLOUDS, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 269(3), 1994, pp. 737-741
JHK infrared photometry is given for all 57 of the very red stars (inc
luding C- and M-type stars) discovered by Demers et al. in the outer h
aloes and intercloud region of the Magellanic Clouds. The colours, mag
nitudes and spectral types of these stars are similar to those of star
s in intermediate-age clusters in the Clouds, and suggest an age of 1
to a few Gyr for these field objects. The ratio of C- to M-type stars
is discussed briefly.
