L. Heijnen et al., ORTHOTICS AND REHABILITATION FOR CHRONIC HEMOPHILIC SYNOVITIS OF THE ANKLE - AN OVERVIEW, Clinical orthopaedics and related research, (343), 1997, pp. 68-73
The ankle is the second most affected joint in hemophilia. Recurrent b
leeding leads to chronic synovitis. Prevention of chronic synovitis sh
ould start with prophylactic replacement therapy or on demand treatmen
t of recurrent hemarthrosis. Attention must be given to the function o
f the ankle joint. When instability is present, an extensive range of
exercises is important. An orthotic or shoe adaption may be useful dur
ing the rehabilitation process. Viscoheels worn in shoes seem to reduc
e the bleeding frequency and pain.
