Abstract
The Messinian carbonate platform of the Maltese islands is composed of successive sigmoidal sedimentary bodies prograding towards the ENE. T he last one includes stromatolitic layers and emergent levels. The sup erimposition of the bodies indicates successive pulse rises of the rel ative sea level. As such a setting is similar to those in other carbon ate platforms of the Mediterranean it was probably related rather thro ugh eustacy, than tectonics.
