The extraction of representations of the fusion barrier distribution f
rom backward-angle, quasi-elastic, elastic and transfer excitation fun
ctions is discussed. Such excitation functions have been measured for
O-16, S-32 and Ca-40, projectiles incident on a variety of targets. Th
e results are compared with representations obtained from fusion excit
ation functions. Varying in their sensitivity, all representations sho
w evidence of the barrier structure. Differences between the scatterin
g and the fusion representations can be related to the effects of coup
ling to residual, weak reaction channels.
