This paper discusses the role played by transfer reactions on the sub-
barrier fusion enhancement. A semiclassical formalism is used to deriv
e the transfer form factors, that are used in coupled-channel calculat
ions. It is shown that transfer reactions that take place at small dis
tances may be an important doorway to fusion. The relation between thi
s formalism and the long-range absorptive fusion potential is also dis
cussed. Results of calculations for the O-16 + Sm-A, S-32 + Mo-100 and
O-16 + Co-59 systems are presented.
