Abstract
We present examples of situations where the absence of a simultaneous analysis of the scattering and reaction mechanisms leads to an incompl ete or even false understanding of these processes. The optical model analysis of the elastic scattering gives rise to different values of r eaction cross sections, while the simple analysis of the fusion excita tion functions may lead to ambiguous or wrong conclusions. Data for th e N-14+Co-59 system obtained by our group is used in the analysis.
