Abstract
Three different methods have been used to analyse periodic three-dimen sional Bragg-reflector structures and a comparison of the results obta ined is drawn. The work has shown that the least-squares boundary resi dual (LSBR) method, when combined with the finite-element method (FEM) , both being vectorial approaches, offers an accurate model of the Bra gg-reflecting pair, taking into account both the variation in indices and the structural dimensions at the waveguide junctions. This work de monstrates that the rigorous LSBR method is both accurate and versatil e in its application and is thus more appropriate for the characteriza tion of practical photonic devices incorporating a distributed Bragg-r eflector (DBR) section, in spite of the slightly increased computation al cost associated with it.
