Novel tungsten and molybdenum complexes of fullerene [M(eta(2)-C-60)(C
O)(2)(phen)(dbm)]. C6H6 . C5H12 (M = W 1 or Mo 2; dbm = dibutyl maleat
e; phen = I,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized by heating a solu
tion of C-60 with [M(CO)(4)(phen)] and dbm in toluene followed by chro
matography over silica gel. They have been characterized by chemical a
nalysis, IR, UV/VIS, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal
X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes are isomorphous. The metal a
tom co-ordination is distorted octahedral with the two CO groups and p
hen in the equatorial plane and the metal binds in an eta(2) fashion t
o C-C bonds of C-60 and dbm. Both complexes are remarkably stable in a
ir and have unusually good solubility.
