A new water soluble receptor 5,11,17,23-tetrasulphonato-25,27-di droxy
carbonylmethoxy)-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene was synthesized and char
acterized and its proton and copper(II) complexes were studied and com
pared with the analogous species of the fully carboxylated ligand 5,11
,17,23-tetrasulphonato ,28-tetrakis(hydroxycarbonylmethoxy)caliz[4]are
ne. Delta H and Delta S degrees values are crucial for understanding t
he peculiar acid-base properties of the ligand. EPR spectra together w
ith the UV-VIS spectral data reveal the coordination stereochemistry o
f the copper(II) species.
