Formation of an oxide scale on high temperature alloy is a factor favo
uring protection of the metal. Protective properties depend strongly o
n the adherence of the oxide scale. It is well known that the process
of oxidation can induce deformation. The main cause of this effect is
thought to be the str-es,res that may exist in the oxide, in the subst
rate and at the metal/oxide interface. A model is proposed for the str
uctural transformation and rite corresponding induced deformation in a
physical three-dimensional interface in the metal/oxide system. The m
odel is applied to the case of the oxidation ofthe (001) Fe surface.
