Abstract
The design of optimal dead-beat controllers for first-order plants is considered. The simple nature of these plants leads to ripple-free ste p response, a property that is highly desirable. The minimum energy an d minimum effort control problems are formulated and solved with an an alytical and generalized approach. Analytical expressions for the digi tal controller pulse transfer functions along with the resulting contr ol sequences are derived. Generalized curves for the maximum control s ignals appearing in the system are also presented. The latter can be u sed for the determination of the minimum sampling period when the maxi mum control signal is specified. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
