Abstract
Practical spreadsheet techniques are proposed for the deterministic sl ope stability analysis based on Janbu's generalized procedure of slice s (GPS) and a probabilistic analysis that obtains the same reliability index as the first order reliability method (FORM). The equilibrium e quations of slices are solved automatically. An intuitive ellipsoid pe rspective greatly simplifies the reliability analysis, A search for th e deterministic critical slip surface and the reliability-based critic al slip surface is automatic, despite the fact that the factor-of-safe ty expressions and the performance function are non-explicit. The conc eptual simplicity, ease of implementation, and practical versatility o f the proposed perspectives and methods are emphasized. (C) 1997 Elsev ier Science Ltd.
